It was lovely to welcome Rosemary Siebert who took the children’s service on the third Sunday in April and it was good to see a number of children in the congregation and helping with the proceedings. Also present were young people and their carers from Bethany Lodge. Rosemary brought with her some friends from St John’s who showed a DVD and then gave a short talk. It was a delightful service with the theme of Hope running through the hymns and prayers. Afterwards coffee and biscuits were served and all present enjoyed a chat together.
The concert to be held in New Romney church on July 5 at 7.30 pm has a Dymchurch connection. Entitled “The Fifth Continent – A Gift from the Sea” the main work of the evening was composed by Paul Patterson for countertenor choir, brass and organ and is set to poetry about the Romney Marsh. The text was specially written by Ben Kay and the work commissioned by the John Armitage Memorial. John Armitage used to spend holidays at Dymchurch where his parents had a bungalow on Sands Estate. His father, Cyril Armitage, was Precentor at Westminster Abbey and Rector at St Bride’s Church, Fleet Street, and his grandfather was Major (Fred) Krabbé who built Bridge House by the Seawall in The Oval.
This month’s magazine has a photo of Canterbury Cathedral by John Hendy on the cover, proving, if proof were needed that he is a very talented photographer. As Peter is having a well-earned rest, the Revd Martin Dale has stepped in to contribute the letter from the Rectory; he writes most interestingly about Malcolm Muggeridge’s conversion from Marxist to Christian. Diana Luckman reminds us of the plant sale in aid of Christian Aid on May 17 between 2 and 4 pm. The following day, May 18, there is a concert at All Saints Church, Burmarsh given by the South London choir “Sine Nomine” who sang there four years’ ago to great acclaim.
The Easter Family Service in Newchurch went off very well; Newchurch intend to have a family service on the first Sunday of every month. The Newchurch WI continues to fill a page with their interests and activities which makes good reading.
Children from Burmarsh who belong to the International Karate Club have been to the Lady Waterfalls in the Brecon Beacons to toughen up by training under the waterfall. What an interesting experience for youngsters accustomed to the quiet flat landscape of the Romney Marsh! This was following a Blue Peter invitation; we must look out for them receiving their badges on the programme.
A fascinating issue of the magazine, beautifully turned out as usual but in the face of health problems suffered by our intrepid editor. Well done, Mike
